NNN, Turnamic, and SNS (Fit Guide)<\/h2>\n\n

When choosing boots for cross-country skiing or roller skiing, it’s important to understand which binding system they are compatible with. The most common systems are NNN<\/strong>, Turnamic<\/strong>, and the older SNS<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Here we explain the differences and how to choose the right boot.<\/p>\n\n

\n\n

NNN \u2013 The Most Common Standard<\/h2>\n\n

NNN (New Nordic Norm)<\/strong> is currently the most common binding standard for cross-country skiing.<\/p>\n\n

The system is used by many manufacturers, including:<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  • Rottefella<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Fischer<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Alpina<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Madshus<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Rossignol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    An NNN boot features:<\/p>\n\n

      \n
    • a metal bar in the forefoot<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • two longitudinal guide grooves in the sole<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

      The binding has corresponding grooves that stabilize the boot.<\/p>\n\n

      Advantages<\/h3>\n\n
        \n
      • very stable system<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • wide range of boots<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • compatible across many brands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

        NNN is currently used for both cross-country skis and roller skis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

        \n\n

        Turnamic \u2013 NNN without Screws<\/h2>\n\n

        Turnamic<\/strong> is a more modern binding system based on the NNN standard.<\/p>\n\n

        It was developed by Fischer and Rossignol and uses a mounting plate instead of screws.<\/p>\n\n

        This means the binding can be:<\/p>\n\n

          \n
        • moved forward or backward<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • adjusted without tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

          Important to Know<\/h3>\n\n

          Turnamic bindings still use NNN-compatible boots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

          This means that a boot that works with NNN also works with Turnamic.<\/p>\n\n

          \n\n

          SNS \u2013 An Older System<\/h2>\n\n

          SNS (Salomon Nordic System)<\/strong> was developed by Salomon and was previously used by many skiers.<\/p>\n\n

          SNS boots have:<\/p>\n\n

            \n
          • a metal bar in the forefoot<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • a wide guide rail in the middle<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

            This differs from NNN, which uses two narrower grooves.<\/p>\n\n

            Important<\/h3>\n\n

            SNS and NNN are not compatible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

            This means that:<\/p>\n\n

              \n
            • SNS boots only work with SNS bindings<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • NNN boots only work with NNN \/ Turnamic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

              SNS is less commonly used today as most manufacturers have switched to NNN.<\/p>\n\n

              Fit Guide \u2013 How Boots Should Fit<\/h2>\n\n

              A good fit is crucial for both comfort and control.<\/p>\n\n

              Boots should fit snugly but not tightly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

              Consider this<\/h3>\n\n

              Toe Room<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

              Toes should have a little room to move, especially for classic skiing.<\/p>\n\n

              Heel Grip<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

              The heel should sit securely without lifting when you push off.<\/p>\n\n

              Foot Width<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

              Different brands suit different foot shapes.<\/p>\n\n

              Generally:<\/p>\n\n

              • Alpina \u2013 slightly wider fit<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Fischer \u2013 more athletic fit<\/li>\n\n\n\n

                Boots for Roller Skis<\/h2>\n\n

                For roller skis, most people use regular cross-country ski boots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

                The difference is that roller skiing often takes place on hard surfaces and in warmer temperatures, which means many appreciate:<\/p>\n\n

                • good ventilation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • stable ankle<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • durable sole<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

                  Bindings for roller skis are usually NNN-compatible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
